The City of Hartford and Hartford Public Schools are partnering to provide a safe route to school. Safe Routes 2 School is a national movement to make it safe, convenient and fun for children to bicycle and walk to school. When routes are safe, walking or biking to and from school is an easy way to get the regular physical activity children need to succeed. Some of the goals for this project are to improve Street Lighting, Sidewalks, Bike Paths and Safety along the routes to school. The Safe Routes 2 School Team welcomes your comments, observations and participation.

Purposes of Safe Routes to School Programs

  1. To enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school
  2. To make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age
  3. To facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption and air pollution in the vicinity of elementary schools
